3.1 Sens de variation et comparaison

Propriété. La fonction ln⁡\ln est strictement croissante sur ]0 ;+∞[]0\,;+\infty[.

Démonstration. Soient 0<a<b0 < a < b. Si l'on avait ln⁡a≥ln⁡b\ln a \geq \ln b, la croissance de l'exponentielle donnerait a=eln⁡a≥eln⁡b=ba = \mathrm{e}^{\ln a} \geq \mathrm{e}^{\ln b} = b, ce qui est faux. Donc ln⁡a<ln⁡b\ln a < \ln b.

  • ln⁡x<0  ⟺  0<x<1\ln x < 0 \iff 0 < x < 1 ;
  • ln⁡x=0  ⟺  x=1\ln x = 0 \iff x = 1 ;
  • ln⁡x>0  ⟺  x>1\ln x > 0 \iff x > 1.

Par exemple, ln⁡0,5<0\ln 0{,}5 < 0 et ln⁡3>0\ln 3 > 0.

3.3 La méthode

Exemple 9. Résoudre ln⁡x+ln⁡(x−3)=ln⁡10\ln x + \ln(x - 3) = \ln 10.

  1. Il faut x>0x > 0 et x−3>0x - 3 > 0, c'est-à-dire x>3x > 3.
  2. Pour x>3x > 3 : ln⁡(x(x−3))=ln⁡10\ln\big(x(x - 3)\big) = \ln 10.
  3. Donc x2−3x=10x^2 - 3x = 10, soit x2−3x−10=0x^2 - 3x - 10 = 0, c'est-à-dire (x−5)(x+2)=0(x - 5)(x + 2) = 0 : x=5x = 5 ou x=−2x = -2.
  4. Seul 55 est strictement supérieur à 33. S={5}\mathcal{S} = \{5\}. Vérification : ln⁡5+ln⁡2=ln⁡10\ln 5 + \ln 2 = \ln 10.

Exemple 10. Résoudre e2x−1=7\mathrm{e}^{2x - 1} = 7. Comme 7>07 > 0 : 2x−1=ln⁡72x - 1 = \ln 7, donc x=1+ln⁡72≈1,473x = \dfrac{1 + \ln 7}{2} \approx 1{,}473.

Exemple 11. Résoudre ln⁡(2x+1)=3\ln(2x + 1) = 3. Il faut 2x+1>02x + 1 > 0, soit x>−12x > -\frac12. Alors 2x+1=e32x + 1 = \mathrm{e}^3, donc x=e3−12≈9,543x = \dfrac{\mathrm{e}^3 - 1}{2} \approx 9{,}543, qui vérifie bien x>−12x > -\frac12.

3.5 Inéquations

Exemple 12. Résoudre ln⁡(3−x)≥1\ln(3 - x) \geq 1. Il faut 3−x>03 - x > 0, soit x<3x < 3. Comme 1=ln⁡e1 = \ln \mathrm{e} et que ln⁡\ln est croissante : 3−x≥e3 - x \geq \mathrm{e}, soit x≤3−e≈0,282x \leq 3 - \mathrm{e} \approx 0{,}282. Ces nombres vérifient bien x<3x < 3. S=]−∞ ;3−e]\mathcal{S} = \left]-\infty\,;3 - \mathrm{e}\right].

Exemple 13. Résoudre e−0,5x<0,2\mathrm{e}^{-0{,}5x} < 0{,}2. Comme 0,2=eln⁡0,20{,}2 = \mathrm{e}^{\ln 0{,}2} : −0,5x<ln⁡0,2-0{,}5x < \ln 0{,}2. On divise par −0,5-0{,}5, qui est négatif : le sens de l'inégalité change, x>−2ln⁡0,2x > -2\ln 0{,}2. Or ln⁡0,2=ln⁡(15)=−ln⁡5\ln 0{,}2 = \ln\left(\frac15\right) = -\ln 5, donc x>2ln⁡5≈3,219x > 2\ln 5 \approx 3{,}219. S=]2ln⁡5 ;+∞[\mathcal{S} = \left]2\ln 5\,;+\infty\right[.

Exemple 14. Résoudre ln⁡(x−1)<ln⁡(5−x)\ln(x - 1) < \ln(5 - x). Il faut x>1x > 1 et x<5x < 5. Sur ]1 ;5[]1\,;5[ : x−1<5−x  ⟺  x<3x - 1 < 5 - x \iff x < 3. S=]1 ;3[\mathcal{S} = \left]1\,;3\right[.

3.6 Un changement de variable

Exemple 15. Résoudre e2x−5 ex+6=0\mathrm{e}^{2x} - 5\,\mathrm{e}^x + 6 = 0. On pose X=exX = \mathrm{e}^x, avec X>0X > 0 ; comme e2x=(ex)2=X2\mathrm{e}^{2x} = \left(\mathrm{e}^x\right)^2 = X^2, l'équation devient X2−5X+6=0X^2 - 5X + 6 = 0, soit (X−2)(X−3)=0(X - 2)(X - 3) = 0. Donc ex=2\mathrm{e}^x = 2 ou ex=3\mathrm{e}^x = 3 : S={ln⁡2 ;ln⁡3}\mathcal{S} = \{\ln 2\,;\ln 3\}.

Exemple 16. Résoudre (ln⁡x)2−ln⁡x−2=0(\ln x)^2 - \ln x - 2 = 0 sur ]0 ;+∞[]0\,;+\infty[. On pose X=ln⁡xX = \ln x : X2−X−2=0X^2 - X - 2 = 0, soit (X−2)(X+1)=0(X - 2)(X + 1) = 0. Donc ln⁡x=2\ln x = 2 ou ln⁡x=−1\ln x = -1 : S={1e ;e2}\mathcal{S} = \left\{\frac1{\mathrm{e}}\,;\mathrm{e}^2\right\}.
